Force Is Not Pressure, and That Confusion Ruins Glue-Ups

Clamp packaging brags about pounds of clamping force. Force is the total squeeze the screw or lever can generate. Pressure is that force divided by the area it has to cover, and pressure is what the glue responds to. Stand on an oak floor in sneakers and nothing happens. Put the same body weight on one stiletto heel and you dent the boards. Identical force, completely different pressure.

Glue makers generally point to roughly 100 to 150 psi for softwoods like pine, and closer to 175 to 250 psi for dense hardwoods like maple. Run the numbers on a plain edge joint. Two boards 24 inches long and 3/4 inch thick meet across about 18 square inches. Even if it spread perfectly, one clamp rated near 1000 pounds gives you a bit over 50 psi. Three of them land in the right window. That is the honest reason glue-ups eat clamps, and it has nothing to do with any single clamp being weak.

Pressure Spreads in a Cone, Not Down the Joint

Squeeze does not travel along a glue line the way water travels down a pipe. It fans out from the clamp pad at roughly 45 degrees through the thickness of the wood, so in 3/4 inch stock a single clamp only truly pressurizes an inch or two of joint on either side of the jaw. How Many Clamps Do You Actually Need?

Start with the joint, not the wall. Divide your longest glue line by 8 inches and add one, then plan to alternate clamps above and below the panel.
