The sheen of a finish affects more than appearance. It changes how much light a wood surface reflects, how clearly it shows scratches and dust, how easy it is to clean, and how forgiving it will be when the preparation is less than perfect. The right choice depends on the Read more
Why Dense Hardwood Is Difficult to Finish Dense hardwoods such as maple, cherry, beech, teak, rosewood, and many exotic species can produce a beautiful finish, but they leave little room for poor preparation. Their tight grain and low porosity give finishes fewer places to grip. Some also contain natural oils, Read more
A wood finish can look perfect in the shop and wrong in the room where the furniture will live. Stain color, sheen, grain, and even apparent warmth change with daylight, LED bulbs, incandescent lamps, and the color of nearby walls. Comparing samples under one light is one of the easiest Read more
A wood finish can feel dry and still be too soft for sanding, stacking, washing, or heavy use. “Dry” usually means the surface is no longer wet or tacky. “Cured” means the finish has developed enough hardness and chemical resistance to perform as intended. The difference matters: a tabletop that Read more
Wood can look clean and still be contaminated enough to ruin a coating. Silicone polish, wax, grease, uncured glue, sanding dust, and moisture can cause fisheyes, craters, peeling, stain blotches, or a finish that never hardens properly. Testing before you stain, paint, or clear-coat is cheaper than stripping a failed Read more
Why Make a Sample Board Wood stain rarely looks the same on a store sample, computer screen, or can label as it does on your project. Wood species, grain direction, sanding scratches, glue residue, and the finish over the stain all change the result. A sample board gives you a Read more
Adding a new finish over an existing wood coating can save hours of stripping and sanding, but only if the two finishes bond and remain stable together. A surface may look clean and sound while still rejecting the new product, softening under it, or releasing the old coating from the Read more
Good new paint starts with the old paint. If the existing coating is dirty, glossy, loose, or contaminated with grease, the new finish may peel, blister, or show every dent underneath it. Preparing previously painted wood is not difficult, but it is more than giving the surface a quick scuff. Read more
Why Oily Hardwood Is Difficult to Glue and Finish Oily hardwoods such as teak, ipe, rosewood, cocobolo, and some varieties of ebony contain extractives that can interfere with adhesion. The problem is not simply that the surface feels greasy. Oils can migrate out of the wood after sanding, prevent glue Read more
Previously varnished wood needs more than a quick scuff with sandpaper. The new finish must bond to a surface that may contain wax, polish, grease, silicone, old stain, and brittle varnish. Good preparation removes contamination, flattens damage, and leaves enough texture for the new coating to grip without unnecessarily removing Read more
